If you ask Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach resident Helen Karoll about her beginnings, she might smile and tell you her story actually started long before she was born—on a ship crossing the Atlantic at the dawn of the 20th century. That’s where her parents, Helen and Walter Juckiewicz, met and fell in love, both of them having left Poland in search of a new life. It’s a story of chance, hope, and courage—the very qualities she would come to embody herself.

Helen arrived in the world on June 26, 1928, in Bayridge, Brooklyn, the youngest of four children and the only girl in the family. Growing up in a house full of brothers, Helen quickly learned to hold her own—a foundation for the strong, independent woman she would become.

She attended St. Michael’s Elementary and then Girl’s Commercial High School, both in Brooklyn. After graduation, Helen landed her first job as an Executive Secretary at Trans World Airways headquarters in Manhattan. It wasn’t just a desk job—her role came with the perk of free travel, and Helen didn’t let that go to waste. Alongside three close friends, she seized every opportunity to explore the world. They visited Europe extensively, with Paris capturing Helen’s heart. But it was Egypt that left the deepest mark. The history, culture, and flavors she found there felt like a world apart from everything she’d known—an adventure she never forgot.

Years later, after marrying Joseph Karoll and raising their two sons, Peter and Kevin, Helen took a position at Roche Pharmaceuticals. She was fortunate enough to keep her beloved travel benefits, and she made good use of them whenever she could.

In 1958, Helen and Joe settled in Waldwick, New Jersey, to be closer to his work. Their home was the kind that buzzed with energy—her parents lived with them, and the boys filled the rooms with projects and laughter. There were rockets to build, remote control boats and planes to fly, and dogs underfoot: two Schnauzers, one after another, and a lively Dalmatian who kept everyone on their toes. When Helen needed a moment of quiet, she’d sit at the piano or pick up her knitting, finding a little peace amid the joyful chaos.

Once the boys had gone off to college, Helen and Joe returned to their love of travel. Japan became their new favorite destination, a place that offered fresh discoveries and memories.

When Joe’s health declined and he became wheelchair-bound, the couple moved to Vero Beach, Florida, swapping cold winters for sunshine and a smaller home. It was in Florida that Helen indulged in a little fun of her own—a Solara convertible, perfect for breezy drives around town. She doesn’t drive anymore, but she still misses those carefree rides with the top down.

Life has demanded resilience from Helen. She’s outlived her husband and both sons, yet she remains surrounded by family and love. Her grandchildren live in Texas, and her extended family stretches from Florida to Germany. In Florida, loved ones help Helen with doctor’s appointments and shopping, but it’s her great-grandniece, Ameline, who brings a special joy these days—especially since Ameline shares Helen’s well-known love of chocolate.

Helen Karoll’s story is one of adventure, devotion, and deep-rooted strength. To know her is to understand what it means to greet life with open arms, whether you’re boarding a ship into the unknown, gathering family close, or savoring a square of chocolate with someone you love.

A Legacy of Care: Honoring Nurturing Hearts This Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a time to recognize the steady, often quiet work of caring for others. For many, mothers are the first example of what it means to nurture. They notice what others need, offer support without being asked, and create a sense of stability that carries through every stage of life. Their care is not defined by grand gestures but by consistency, attentiveness, and a deep sense of responsibility for others' well-being.

That same spirit of care can be seen in those who choose to serve as caregivers. While their roles may look different, the foundation is much the same. Each caregiver at Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach pays attention to the small details, offers patience when it is needed, and provides support in ways that preserve dignity and comfort. Like mothers, they often step in quietly, meeting needs before they are spoken, creating an environment where others feel safe and valued.

There is also a shared understanding that care is not one-size-fits-all. Both mothers and caregivers learn to adapt, responding to changing needs over time. They balance practical responsibilities with emotional awareness, recognizing that true care involves both. Whether it is offering encouragement, providing reassurance, or simply being present, their work reflects a commitment that goes beyond routine tasks.

In many cases, these two roles meet in a meaningful way. Caregivers often find themselves supporting the very mothers who once spent their lives caring for others. There is a sense of continuity in that exchange, where the same qualities that defined one generation are now reflected in another. It is not a replacement, but a continuation of the same spirit of compassion and attentiveness.

This Mother’s Day and National Nurses Week, it is worth recognizing that nurturing is not limited to a single role or a single season of life. It is a quality that manifests in many forms, carried by those willing to give their time, attention, and care to others. Whether in a family or within a senior living community, that shared commitment creates environments that embody the spirit of motherhood, where people feel supported, respected, and truly cared for.

Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach resident Ann Murray’s story begins in the charming suburb of Webster Groves, Missouri, where she grew up surrounded by close-knit community life. After finishing high school, she took her first step into the wider world by enrolling at Vanderbilt University. But life had other plans, and soon she found herself transferring to Boston University, where she spent several formative years. Boston wasn’t just a place to study—it became the backdrop to her early career as she worked there, gaining valuable experience that would shape her future.

Her journey then carried her south to Coral Gables, Florida, where Ann’s love for education blossomed. She wore many hats—as a teacher and in personnel roles—until her talents caught the eye of the Dade County School Board, who hired her to interview and recruit teachers. It was clear Ann had a knack for connecting with people and supporting their growth.

It was during the excitement of the Goldwater campaign that Ann met Don Murray, a man whose path would soon intertwine deeply with hers. Don had just opened his dental practice and was busy helping to form the Young Republican Club in Miami. From the moment Ann met him, she knew something special was happening. In fact, after their very first date, she told a friend she had just met the man she was going to marry. Their life together would grow rich and full with three children: Peggy, Jim, and Michael. Along the way, Ann became a devoted mother and, later, a cherished “Mimi” to seven grandchildren who brighten her days.

In 1997, the couple sought a quieter pace and moved to Vero Beach, leaving behind Miami’s energetic buzz. The change was significant. No more PTA meetings where Ann had once been president, no more regular goodbyes to friends and tennis partners. But quiet didn't mean still. Ann found new ways to fill her life with purpose and connection. She served on the board of the Women’s Refuge, a Christian ministry, for 25 years, showing her deep commitment to supporting others. Her involvement didn’t stop there; she remained active in the Women’s Republican Club, her Pi Beta Phi alumnae group, and her local neighborhood Homeowners Association.

If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to be invited to Ann’s home, you know she’s legendary for her gift as a hostess. No matter where she’s lived, her door is always open for gatherings—be it elegant luncheons or cozy dinner parties. Beyond entertaining, Ann’s passions include gardening, cooking, and hunting for treasures in antique shops, each activity reflecting her warm, nurturing spirit and eye for beauty.

Ann Murray’s life is a tapestry of dedication to family, community, and the simple joys that make a house a home. Getting to know her is like catching a glimpse of a life well-lived—rich with love, kindness, and endless invitations to share in the warmth of her world.

We are honored to share the story of Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach resident Claire Alison Jordan Connor—a woman whose life is a testament to resilience, devotion, and the quiet strength of love.

Claire was born in Oregon City, Oregon, the third of twelve children, and just eleven minutes ahead of her twin sister, Chloe. Her childhood was shaped by the energy and camaraderie of a large family. Growing up mostly in Colorado, Claire’s parents owned a restaurant, and both cooked for their children. It was in that bustling kitchen that Claire learned to cook—a skill she still treasures and shares today.

When Claire was around ten, the Jordan family moved to northwest Washington, where her father became an Alaska fisherman—a job that brought adventure and new stories home each season. Summers for Claire and her siblings meant early mornings picking strawberries and raspberries to earn money for school clothes and spending money. Those years instilled in her a deep work ethic and a sense of responsibility that would carry her through life.

As a teenager, Claire faced a serious health challenge when she developed Bright’s disease after a bout of strep throat, beginning a lifelong journey with kidney complications. Thirty-five years ago, Claire received a life-changing kidney transplant from her younger sister, Denise—a miracle of survival, faith, and family that she counts among her greatest blessings.

In her early twenties, Claire moved to Columbia, South Carolina, forging a new path far from home. It was there she met Steve Connor, who was instantly smitten and always said she was “the most beautiful girl in the world.” Together, Claire and Steve built two homes from the ground up and remodeled three more, making each space a reflection of their shared dedication and love. When Claire met Steve’s son Eric at age 8, she embraced her role as stepmother with open arms. Today, she is a proud stepmom and grandmother to two grandsons—both college graduates and hardworking men whose accomplishments fill her with pride.

Claire’s professional life was defined by her commitment to service. She spent a long career in medical supplies, working onsite at hospitals to ensure every need was met and every contract fulfilled. Her diligence and empathy earned her respect from colleagues and clients alike, and she retired from Owens & Minor at age 66, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and care. Steve retired at 64, and together, they became devoted caregivers for Steve’s mother—a widow for forty years until her passing at age 91. This chapter of caregiving deepened Claire’s already strong sense of compassion and family connection.

In 2021, Claire and Steve moved to Vero Beach, Florida, to be closer to her older sister. They filled their days with gardening, boating on the water, and the occasional joyful splurge on a new car—simple pleasures that brightened their new chapter together. Not long after their move, Steve suffered a stroke, and Claire became his steadfast primary caregiver. Then, on July 9, 2025, Claire herself experienced a stroke affecting her left side—a unique challenge for someone who is left-handed. Through it all, she has shown remarkable determination, working tirelessly at her recovery and inspiring everyone who knows her.

Steve passed away in September 2025 at a nursing home in Vero Beach. Through grief and adversity, Claire’s faith and strength have never wavered. Her journey is one marked by courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to those she loves. We are grateful to have Claire as part of the Renaissance family, where her spirit, perseverance, and kindness continue to inspire us all.

Peggy Goucher’s journey is marked by quiet strength, deep devotion, and a genuine love for others. Originally from Ilion, a small, close-knit town in upstate New York, Peggy grew up surrounded by the values of family, faith, and connection that have guided her through every chapter of her life.

In her thirties, Peggy made the meaningful decision to move to Florida to be closer to her parents, opening the door to new opportunities and memories. Though she most recently lived in Boca Raton, much of her Florida story unfolded in the Tampa area. It was there, while working in advertising sales, that she met Raymond, the man who would become her partner and best friend. Together, Peggy and Raymond built a life rooted in companionship, sharing twenty-six years of marriage and a wealth of experiences. When the time came, they embraced retirement in Zephyrhills, savoring the slower pace and simple joys of each day together.

Even in retirement, Peggy’s commitment to staying active and giving back never faded. She remained deeply involved in the Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic minister and participating in the Catholic Women’s Guild—roles that allowed her to nurture the sense of community that has always been so important to her.

Peggy’s kindness extends to every living thing. She’s always had a soft spot for animals and adopted a cat who became her companion, a reflection of her gentle and compassionate spirit.

Now, as Peggy settles into life at Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach, she looks forward to making new friends, building fresh connections, and embracing the possibilities of this new chapter. We are truly happy to welcome Peggy into our community and honored that she now calls Renaissance her home.

The Power of Connection: Why Senior Living Is Good for the Mind and Heart

Social connection plays a powerful role in protecting mental and emotional well-being as we age, yet it is often one of the first things to fade when seniors live alone. Changes in health, mobility or daily routine can make it harder to stay socially engaged, leading many older adults to experience isolation without realizing it. Moving into a senior living community like Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach can be a meaningful step toward restoring connection, purpose and a sense of belonging as well as a means to keeping the mind sharp.

One of the greatest benefits of senior living is the built-in opportunity for daily interaction. Instead of relying on occasional visits or scheduled outings, residents are surrounded by peers and team members who become part of everyday life. Shared meals, group activities and casual conversations create natural moments of connection that help seniors feel less alone and more emotionally supported. Friendships formed often become deep and meaningful, offering comfort during both joyful and challenging moments.

Social engagement also supports mental sharpness and emotional resilience. Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach offers structured programs such as musical events, games, classes and creative activities that encourage conversation and learning. These experiences help keep the mind active while providing excitement for the days ahead. For many seniors, having something to look forward to each day makes a meaningful difference in overall outlook.

For families, choosing senior living can bring peace of mind. Knowing a loved one is socially connected and emotionally supported eases concerns about loneliness and isolation. Families often notice positive changes after a move, including improved mood, increased engagement and a renewed sense of joy in their loved one’s daily life.

Ultimately, moving into a senior living community is not about giving something up. It is about gaining connection, companionship and support. By prioritizing social interaction and meaningful relationships, Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach helps seniors protect their mental and emotional health while enjoying a fuller, more connected way of life.

After the busy holiday season, many seniors notice changes in energy levels, mobility or comfort, making the New Year a natural time for families to pause and consider what support will help their loved ones feel their best. New Year care focuses on thoughtful steps that nurture independence, confidence and quality of life throughout the year. For some seniors who may be feeling the effects of aging, a senior living community that emphasizes whole-person wellness, such as Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach, can offer the right balance of support, connection and peace of mind for both residents and families.

One important part of New Year care is access to therapy services that help seniors maintain strength, balance and independence. Physical and occupational therapy can play a key role in improving mobility, supporting recovery and enhancing daily routines. At Renaissance, therapy services are coordinated with care teams, making it easier for residents to participate consistently and work toward goals that support long-term wellness.

Pain management is another essential focus as seniors begin the year. Chronic pain can affect more than just physical comfort; it can also impact mood, sleep and overall quality of life. Senior living communities take a comprehensive approach to pain management, combining medical oversight, therapy, movement and comfort-focused strategies. This collaborative care helps ensure concerns are addressed early, allowing residents to remain engaged and comfortable in their daily lives.

Staying active is a powerful way for seniors to support both physical and emotional well-being. Regular movement helps maintain flexibility, strength and balance while also encouraging social connection. At Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach, residents have access to a variety of opportunities to stay active, from gentle exercise classes and walking groups to wellness programs designed to meet residents where they are. These activities are thoughtfully structured to be safe, enjoyable and empowering.

Equally important to physical care is the social connection that supports mental and emotional wellbeing. Renaissance offers daily opportunities for meaningful interaction, whether through shared meals, group activities, creative programs or simple conversations with neighbors and team members who truly know each resident. These moments of connection help reduce feelings of isolation, encourage a sense of belonging and bring joy to everyday life.

For families, knowing a loved one is supported by a compassionate team that prioritizes therapy, pain management and active living can provide lasting peace of mind. By focusing on whole-person wellness, Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach help residents begin the year feeling supported, capable and connected, creating a strong foundation for health and happiness in the months ahead.

Born in a tiny Alabama town called Children’s Home, Elizabeth “Liz” Arnold grew up in Lakewood, Florida, as the spirited middle child in a family of seven. Life wasn’t easy in those days. She and her siblings often picked cotton before school to help the family make ends meet. Hard work bonded them tightly, forming a loving, close-knit group whose shared memories still make Liz smile.

Fate stepped in the day Roy, a young airman stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, spotted her in town. Captivated, he wasted no time sweeping Liz off her feet. At just 16, she married Roy—22 at the time—and moved to Vero Beach to live with his family while he finished his service. It was there that Liz and Roy’s sister, Betty, became instant friends. Betty taught her how to drive a car… and how to smoke cigarettes—skills Liz still laughs about today.

After Roy returned home, the couple built a small house and began raising their four children. Liz stayed home in those early years by taking in laundry and ironing, then later joined Vero’s thriving citrus industry, working long days in the packing houses. She spent time at a local plant nursery as well, where she discovered a lifelong love for gardening.

Eventually, Liz found her career home at Piper Aircraft, where she proudly worked for 35 years before retiring. Retirement opened the door to the adventures she and Roy cherished most. Together they traveled in their RV camper with the Piper group, exploring campgrounds across Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. They loved vacationing in the mountain ranges of North Carolina and Tennessee, joining a bowling travel league with Roy’s cousin, Ira Jack, and his wife, Judy, and—whenever the “specks” (speckled perch) were biting—heading to the water to fish.

And when there was fish, there were cookouts. Liz was famous for her cooking, and anyone who knew her will tell you: Aunt Liz made the best meals around.

Liz and Roy shared 64 years of marriage until his passing in 2018. Today, Liz calls Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach home, where she continues to cherish time with the people who matter most. Visits from family and friends brighten her days, but nothing brings her more joy than time spent with her six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren, who adore her deeply.

A life of grit, love, laughter, and family—Liz’s story is a beautiful reminder of what truly endures.

Caring for Seniors During the Holidays: Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Make the Move

The holiday season is often filled with family gatherings, joyful traditions and meaningful moments—but for many families caring for an aging loved one, it can also be one of the most stressful times of the year. As routines change and days get busier, meeting the needs of aging parents or grandparents can become more complex, leaving family caregivers feeling stretched thin. While many families consider senior living as a helpful next step, they often hesitate to make the transition before the holidays. Common concerns include the fear that a loved one will feel lonely or abandoned, the worry it will disrupt the season and family traditions, or bring judgment from family and friends. But for many families, waiting may actually increase stress for both seniors and caregivers rather than ease it.

In reality, moving into a senior living community before the holidays can be one of the most supportive decisions a family can make. At Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach, the holidays are filled with festive events, warm social connections and compassionate team members who help residents feel at home quickly. Rather than spending the season stressed and exhausted, families can share more meaningful, quality time together—free from the pressures of caregiving tasks and safety concerns. Renaissance encourages visits, whether it is at their community or at home for Christmas dinner. Instead of a disruption, the move often brings relief, stability and more joy to everyone involved.

The holidays can also highlight areas where a senior needs additional support: increased confusion in busy environments, difficulty navigating crowded gatherings and challenges with mobility often become more noticeable this time of year. Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach is trained to meet these needs in a way that keeps the season enjoyable. For those with limited mobility, communities offer accessible events, transportation assistance, and safe, thoughtfully designed spaces—ensuring seniors can still participate in the traditions they love. For residents living with Alzheimer’s or dementia, structured activities, sensory-friendly celebrations and predictable daily routines help prevent overstimulation and confusion. These specialized supports help families worry less and give seniors a safer, more comfortable holiday environment.

Christmas-time is already hectic, and many caregivers are already juggling managing medications, preparing meals, assisting with personal care and coordinating doctor’s visits. By moving a loved one into a community before the holiday rush, caregivers gain the gift of rest. Rather than carrying the full weight alone, they can rely on a team of trained professionals who are available around the clock. This relief allows caregivers to enjoy holiday moments more fully—sharing stories over dinner, watching favorite movies together or simply being present without the pressure of caregiving.

It’s also important to remember that the transition into senior living doesn’t erase family traditions—it often enhances them. Families can decorate their loved one’s new apartment together, bring treasured holiday recipes to share or join community events designed to include residents and their families. If your family has been considering senior living but putting it off until the new year, this season may actually be the perfect time to make the move. With compassionate care, festive community life and support tailored to each resident’s needs, Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach can help bring peace, comfort and joy to your loved one and to you.

If you’ve seen Ray around the community, there’s a good chance he’s greeted you by name—and that you’ve greeted him right back. Much like Norm from Cheers, Ray is a friendly fixture here. He’s the kind of person whose quiet presence grows warmer the more you get to know him, and whose quick wit and kindness have a way of drawing people in.

Ray grew up in Pontiac, Michigan, the eldest of seven children. His father was a GM executive with Pontiac, and his mother poured her energy into raising a lively and loving family. The house was always bustling, full of laughter and the sounds of childhood.

From early on, Ray was drawn to the outdoors. His world revolved around sports, adventure, and a fair bit of mischief. He landed his first job at a sporting goods store, where he picked up a passion for skateboarding. With six siblings to explore alongside, the days were packed with biking excursions, water-skiing on local lakes, and memorable ski trips each winter.

Ray’s knack for hard work and fun led him during high school to work for the local Parks & Rec Department, where he helped carve out new horseback trails. When the project wrapped up, the payoff came with a ride on those very trails. Mounted on a spirited black stallion named Sunny, Ray still laughs when he remembers the wild ride the horse gave him that day—a story he shares with a glint in his eye and still laughs about today.

In 1977, Ray met Jayne, the woman who would become his wife and his best friend. Together, they made a home in Londonderry, New Hampshire, and filled it with adventure. White-water rafting, spontaneous road trips, and a revolving door of cherished adopted cats were the hallmarks of their life together.

Jayne held a career with the IRS, while Ray found his calling in electronics. He specialized in engineering and quality control, lending his skills to several high-tech companies—including work on top-secret microwave technology for government F-18 fighter jets. There was seriousness to his work, balanced out by a full and happy home life.

The new millennium brought big changes. In 2002, Ray and Jayne headed south to Wilmington, North Carolina, to be closer to Ray’s parents. Ray joined the engineering department at a local golf resort, where his expertise impressed the resort manager so much that he was hired on the spot. The job proved to be a rewarding bridge into retired life.

In 2018, Ray and Jayne moved once more to enjoy retirement together, this time to Vero Beach, a sunlit setting that became the heart of their golden years together. In June 2024, Jayne passed away, leaving behind a lifetime of love and beautiful memories.

Today, Ray brings the same warmth, humor, and generosity to Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach that he’s shared everywhere he’s lived. He remains surrounded by friends and, true to form, another furry companion. His lively kitten, Niki, keeps Ray’s home cheerful and his days full of playful moments.

Ray’s story is one of adventure, resilience, and gentle good humor. We’re grateful to have him as part of our community—someone who not only fills a room with warmth, but makes Renaissance feel even more like home.

Vero Beach, Fla. (Nov. 2025) — At Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach, the health and safety of our residents and team members is our highest priority. As part of our commitment to providing a clean, healthy, and supportive environment, we have replaced traditional cleaning chemicals with a safer, more sustainable solution.

Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach has partnered with Viking Pure Solutions, a leader in non-toxic cleaning technologies, to bring innovative, hospital-grade cleaning and disinfecting to our community. Viking Pure installs on-site systems that generate powerful cleaning and disinfecting solutions using only salt, water, and electricity. This process creates electrolyzed water: a safe, fragrance-free, and highly effective alternative to conventional chemicals.

Unlike many commercial cleaning products, Viking Pure’s solutions are free from harmful ingredients linked to respiratory issues, endocrine disruption, and other health concerns that disproportionately affect older adults. Their disinfectant is EPA-registered as hospital grade and proven to kill bacteria, fungi, and viruses, including norovirus and COVID-19, without the risks associated with harsh chemicals.

If you’ve had the pleasure of meeting Michael Ilardi, you already know he has a warm smile and a story or two to share. Michael was born in the Bronx, NY, and grew up in a lively Italian neighborhood filled with good food, strong family ties, and plenty of hard work. As a young boy, he kept busy delivering bottles of bleach to neighbors and lending a hand in a local Italian deli. Those early years taught him responsibility, community, and a love for simple things done well.

As he got older, Michael found his way into the roofing business. He was taught the trade by a man who would one day become his father-in-law—a relationship that added both skill and family to his life. After many successful years, Michael decided to sell the business and head south with his family for a new chapter in Jupiter, Florida. There, he tried his hand at real estate and even worked as a limo driver, enjoying the chance to meet new people from all walks of life.

These days, at Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach, Michael makes time for the things that bring him joy. He’s an avid golfer and never passes up the chance for a good game. But if you ask him, his biggest source of pride is being “daddy” to his dog Bruno, who keeps him smiling and active.

Michael’s life has been filled with hard work, adventure, and love for family—both two-legged and four-legged. He reminds us all that no matter where life takes you, it’s the relationships and little joys that make the journey worthwhile. We’re so glad to call Michael part of our community!

           Resident Spotlight: Shirley Ann Geiger

If you ask Shirley Ann Geiger about her life, she’ll tell you it’s been equal parts sunshine, adventure, and deep Florida roots. Born and raised in Miami, Shirley’s childhood unfolded beneath palm trees and open skies—a world of horses, citrus groves, and the wild possibilities of the land.

She was a student at Citrus Grove Elementary and Gesu Catholic High School, but her education extended far beyond the classroom. Weekends and summers were spent on her family’s farm in South Miami and their ranch in Yeehaw Junction, where rural Florida left its mark on her heart. Shirley’s spirit for adventure took shape early on, especially when she joined local ranchers in a game called Palmetto Polo—an inventive twist on polo, played with ranch horses and sabal palm stalks for mallets. She competed against teams from other towns, a natural fit for someone who’d already learned the sport back in Miami.

Her senior year brought a change of scenery as she lived at the Yeehaw Junction ranch and attended Vero Beach High School. After graduation, she headed to the University of Florida to study Animal Science—a choice that felt as natural as the land she loved. There, Shirley met Sterling Wood, and together they raised three daughters—Sharon, Sue, and Stacey—anchored by family ties to both Orlando and the family ranch. The beach was an ever-present backdrop, too; her in-laws owned one of just two houses along a pristine, three-mile stretch of Indian River Shores, back when A1A was still just a sandy road.

Shirley’s journey led her back to the ranch, where she married TJ Durrance, a fellow rancher and one of the visionaries behind the Indian Hammock Hunt and Riding Club. In 1980, Shirley charted a new path as the founder of Durrance Realty in Vero Beach, specializing in ranches, large land tracts, and citrus groves—a business grounded in her lifelong connection to Florida’s landscape.

After TJ’s passing, Shirley found love again with Robert Hunt and moved to Ocala, where she spent 26 years surrounded by rolling pastures and new friendships. When Robert passed away earlier this year, Shirley felt the pull of home and returned to Vero Beach, settling at Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach to be close to her daughters. Today, Sue and Stacey live at Indian Hammock, while Sharon remains in Orlando, where her children and grandchildren still call Shirley “Mimi” with affection.

Through every chapter—Miami childhood, ranch adventures, university days, real estate ventures, and family milestones—Shirley’s story is woven with gratitude and a true sense of place. She is, at heart, a woman rooted in Florida’s land and its people, always ready for the next sunrise and the next adventure, surrounded by the love of family and friends.

Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach Honors Three Employees for Their Exemplary Service

Meet three of Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach's employees who make a huge difference in our community!

Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach is blessed by those who have dedicated years to providing love, time and hard-work to the Renaissance residents. Betty Graham, Hilly Davilus and Johana Castañeda are three of those who have gone above and beyond to make residents feel at home, and Renaissance wishes to take a moment to recognize them.

As a receptionist, Betty Graham is one of the first faces you see upon entering at Renaissance. This 81-year-old loves being the one to welcome you. Originally from Ohio, Betty worked as a dental assistant and receptionist prior to joining the team at Renaissance in 2018. Betty has four children, twelve grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a host of pets (including a wallaby) who she takes joy in. She loves to stay active by playing tennis and walking.

Hilly Davilus has been a CNA for the past ten years and has been a fun and loving presence at Renaissance since 2017. He has been crucial in passing along knowledge that he has gleaned over these past ten years to be able to better assist residents, family members and other caregivers. Hilly has many passions that he likes to spend his free time on, including tech, movies, music, history, space and a growing hat and shoe collection.

Johana Auila Castañeda has spent the last five years at Renaissance as a Caregiver and Medtech, but she is hoping to go back to school for a nursing degree, having fallen in love with caregiving. She stands upon giving the best care possible centered on compassion and honor. Born and raised in Indian River country, Johana enjoys spending her time traveling, shopping and being at her family’s farm. She and her husband are hoping to build a house on that farm this coming year.

Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach recognizes the heart and soul exemplified by Betty, Hilly and Johana, and they are grateful to have such an amazing team to help residents and families feel welcome and at home.

Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach, a premier assisted living and memory care, want to take a moment to recognize two of their long-tenured employees: Alla Kramer and Tejai Jones. Renaissance of Vero Beach knows that the only reason they can offer an inviting and homelike environment to their residents is through the hard work and dedication of those who bring their heart and soul with them to work. Alla and Tejai exemplify this commitment, to which Renaissance of Vero Beach says a big “thank you!”.

Alla Kramer was born and raised in Saint Petersburg, Russia, but she found her way to the United States where she married her spouse. Together they have two children and a family dog. Alla joined Renaissance of Vero Beach in July 2017 as the Business Office Manager, which for her felt like a prime opportunity as she already had experience as a business owner. Alla always looks forward to family time and enjoys going to the beach, reading and boating.

As the Food Services Director, Tejai Jones not only knows how to create delicious meals for residents, she goes out of her way to make sure that each resident’s individual needs are met. Originally from Port Saint Lucie, Florida, Tejai has served at Renaissance of Vero Beach since 2016 and has been invaluable in helping to craft menus for many other communities a part of the Legacy Senior Living family. After retirement, Tejai hopes to open her own breakfast café, but in the meantime, she enjoys fishing, relaxing on the beach and spending time with her spouse, their two daughters, grandsons, and cats.

Legacy Senior Living and Dominion Senior Living to Offer New Alzheimer’s Support Services Headed by Dr. Ronald Harvard

Legacy Senior Living is excited to announce a new Alzheimer's Support Service to families caring for loved one's with memory loss disorders.

Cleveland, Tenn. (Feb. 2024) — Legacy Senior Living and Dominion Senior Living, a family of senior living communities serving the Eastern United States, are excited to announce Alzheimer’s Support Services, a new program for both companies. This is a free service that is designed to give support and resources to families and caregivers who are navigating the pressures of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other memory loss conditions.

Dr. Ronald Harvard has come aboard as the Director of Alzheimer’s Support Services. As a pastor, counselor, college professor and primary caregiver to his late wife, Linda, who suffered from Alzheimer’s for 20 years, Dr. Harvard brings many years of experience to this new program. At various times, Dr. Harvard has served his alma mater, Lee University, as a faculty member in the psychology department, as Director of Counseling, and as an adjunct faculty member at Lee Online. He and Linda also served as senior pastor at churches in Florida, Indiana, and Georgia.

With degrees in Biblical Studies, Social Psychology, and Pastoral Counseling, Dr. Harvard’s love for teaching and counseling have defined his life, but no more so than the love of his life, Linda, and their four children.

Dr. Harvard’s introduction to Alzheimer’s was personal and very painful. In the fall of 2003, Dr. Harvard recognized the beginning signs of memory loss in his late wife, Linda. Fifteen years later, Linda became a resident of a Legacy Senior Living community, The Harbor at Legacy Village of Cleveland. In May of 2023, Linda passed away. Dr. Harvard chronicled his struggles and victories in his blog, “Dementia: walking victoriously through the ‘Long Goodbye,’” offering lessons learned, meditations, and comfort to many.

“What became clear to me during the process of loving Linda through the battle of Alzheimer’s, was that I was being prepared to minister to families going through similar situations. My mission in leading this new Alzheimer’s Support Service is to provide behavioral insights, practical direction and comfort through support groups and one-on-one meetings,” said Dr. Harvard.

“This is a program that we are so excited to offer to families that are struggling with the challenges of memory loss. We are eager to welcome Dr. Harvard to this position as he supports other family members and caregivers navigating this overwhelming season,” said Barry Ray, CEO and Co-Founder of Legacy Senior Living.

VERO BEACH, Fl. (October 23, 2020) – In fulfilling the commitment to promote good health, mental stimulation, and social engagement for its residents during the pandemic, Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach and its sister facilities across the Southeast have teamed up with Lee University to enroll 250 seniors in a virtual arts learning program hosted by Artist-in-Residence Maestro Bob Bernhardt.

In weekly webinars streamed every Friday in October, Maestro Bernhardt, artist-in-residence at Lee University and Principal Pops Conductor of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra, explores and discusses pieces of music from the middle ages to modern-day and dives into how they can ignite emotions in listeners.

Titled “Pandemic Playlist,” these virtual classes feature Maestro Bernhardt talking about and playing excerpts from classical and film music that has helped him navigate these uncharted waters. Each online session features the music of reflection, gratitude, joy, and triumph, the music of all kinds that both soothes and enriches the spirit.

“Before the pandemic, Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach residents enjoyed outings and field trips; however, with the increased precautions our facility has taken due to COVID-19, it is important to us to find engaging activities for our residents. We’ve had to really think outside the box to ensure interesting, fulfilling, and safe experiences are available to them. This collaboration between Lee University and Legacy Senior Living’s network of facilities has been wonderful for our residents. It offers a fun, creative activity, and they enjoy the music discussions with Maestro Bernhardt,” said Eric Sajid, Executive Director for Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach.

“Programs like this are much more than a leisure activity for our residents. This type of engagement is a very positive factor in promoting good health for seniors. The social and cognitive engagement help keep their minds working and staying sharp, which is of course essential in the aging process,” said Barry Ray, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Legacy Senior Living, which manages Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach.

Of the approximately 500 students enrolled in the Encore program this semester, 250 are residents of Renaissance Senior Living of Vero Beach and its sister facilities across the Legacy Senior Living network in five Southeastern states. Legacy Senior Living has covered the $25 enrollment fee for each resident who wished to enroll.
